On this page you will find the dna "signature" charts for four separate matched lineages:

  • Lineage 1a George and Jennet (FINLAY) RUNCIMAN
  • Lineage 1b William and Jean (WHITE) RUNCIMAN (the line of William of Crail)
  • Lineage 1c Robert and Janet (SINCLAIR) RUNCIMAN
  • Lineage 1d Alexander and Janet (HENDRIE) RUNCIMAN
  • Possible Lineage 1 tree

  • We do not know exactly how these related lines connect
    For 1a, we do now know that John & Betty (FAMILTON) RUNCIMAN's son William is the father of the Michigan lines of William and Mary (BROWN) RUNCIMAN and of James & Isabella (CARTER) RUNCIMAN .

    A representative of this latter line is still sought, and would be most welcome (check out the Wanted! pages).

    For 1b there is a plausible paper trail back to William RYNSIMAN of North Berwick (son Richard born 1701)
    For 1c the Thomas married to Alison GRIEVE may still be the son of Robert & Janet (SINCLAIR) RUNCIMAN, even though initially this was determined because of the likely William around to be William of Crail - which latter has been disproved.
    For 1d this paper trail looks plausible, but some others expected to match are proving to have different dna signatures!

    George & Jennet (FINLAY) RUNCIMAN:

    Only two participants to date, matching 66/67, so no conclusions can really be reached other than it does look like the relationship has been proven.

    A participant to represent the line of James and Isablla (CARTER) RUNCIMAN would be most welcome!

    Family Tree DNA's Time Predictor shows 82% probability of a common ancestor for Jerald and David by 8 generations given it is known there isn't a connection within 4 generations (without this information the predictor said 88% by 6 generations, 95% by 8).

    We now know that the Michigan families connect to the Wanton Walls ones at John RUNCIMAN married to Elizabeth FAMILTON, DNA and paper trails supporting this.

    Although Jim (R-10) is an excellent match to David (R-1) and Jerry (R-2), the known information doesn't immediately show where the links might be.
    The previous theory that William of Crail was the son of Robert and Janet (Sinclair) Runciman, and brother of the Thomas who married Alison Grieve, forbears of Sir Steven, has been overturned (Oct 2012) by a closer reading of the original papers referring to the support of William's orphaned children.
    The above charts have been separated again for now until we can figure out how best to connect the related trees we know are related, somehow.
    Sir Steven Runciman's grandfather did believe that the Walter who married his "cousin" Marion, was related to the Wanton Walls Runciman family (Lineage 1a above).
    Maybe he was right after all?
    DNA results now show that two descendants of both the William RUNCIMAN of Crail and the line of Thomas & Alison (GRIEVE) RUNCIMAN are a match, along with several, but not all, representatives from the line of Alexander of Meikle Pinkerton.
    Further confirming signatures from Thomas and Alison's line would be most welcome to add weight to this, particularly from a different branch.

    We now have a single representative each from three of the sons/presumed sons of Thomas and Jean (SIMPSON)RUNCIMAN, who do match both each other, and the others in Lineage 1.
    However, some of the others believed to belong to the same family are not a DNA match.
    Because of likely died/daughtered out lines, it is increasingly looking like this conundrum (mismatched dna from descendants all believed to have come from Thomas and Jane/Jean (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN) may remain unsolved via Y-DNA testing.
    If you are a direct line male RUNCIMAN down from Thomas and Jane (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN, particularly from the as yet unrepresented lines, we would love to hear from you.
    If you are a descendant of any of these lines, direct male line or not, we would also appreciate any results from atDNA (a FamilyFinder test) to see where that may lead us.

    We were hoping for a close match between Jere (R-18) and Peter (R-12) as the paper trails indicated that their respective ancestors could both be sons of Thomas and Jane (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN (lineage 1d).
    Yes we have a match, but GD3, all on slower markers. Jere is actually showing as marginally closer to Lineage 1a, but nonetheless, a match to lineage 1, which is better than the other 3 representatives we have from lines believed/assumed to come from Thomas and Jane.

    The generations shown here are based on the 93% probability that R-7 and R-1 share a common ancestor within 10 generations, but it could actually be that the RUNCIMAN dna simply hasn't mutated much, with any link being further back.
    Peter (R-12) is given as 93% within 12 generations to Jerry (R-2), but I've connected him, rightly or wrongly, as shown because one of his differences is on a faster mutating marker.

    We were hoping for a close match between Jere (R-18) and Peter (R-12) as the paper trails indicated that their respective ancestors could both be sons of Thomas and Jane (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN (lineage 1d).
    Yes we have a match, but GD3, all on slower markers. Jere is actually showing as marginally closer to Lineage 1a, but nonetheless, a match to lineage 1, which is better than the other 3 representatives we have from lines believed/assumed to come from Thomas and Jane.
