Joe Fairbairn (F-10)

#1122

FatherHenry Fairbairn (Jun 1899 - Jul 1970)
MotherAnna (cir. 1906 - Dec 1986)

Intro (Witness) Robert is the earliest proven ancestor of both Joe (F-10) and Ron (F-19).
What the project hopes to prove is the story in Joe's grandfather's obituary that he, Albert, was a "cousin" to John A Fairbairn of Hoquiam, even if we are unlikely to ever find out how this may be so.
Joe (F-10)'s results have proved a puzzle, showing characteristics of both "clumps" of Fairbairn lineage 1.
We will shortly see what results a 3rd cousin of Joe's, Ron (F-19), has to add to the overall jigsaw.

Lineage (Testee) Joe was found to be part of Fairbairn Lineage 1e, see here for chart.

Researcher (Researcher) Joe is researching the line of Robert Fairbairn **.
Email: Joe (email current as at Feb 2009).
GeneticDistance (Testee12Markers) At 12 markers the theoretical Genetic Distance (GD) calculations from Joe show: zero to Ron, Mike(IRWIN), Doug(GOODFELLOW), David(TROTTER), (F-8), David(CAMPBELL) and Tom (FTDNA's Time Predictor currently calculates that for exact matches at 12 markers, the probability of a shared common ancestor in 6 generations is 45%, 70% by 12); 1 to Martin, Roy, William and Earl; (which is beginning to show that the "cousinship" to the line of Roy (F-3) is a bit more distant than to the others in the project).
GeneticDistance (Testee37Markers) At 37 markers the theoretical Genetic Distance (GD) calculations from Joe show: 1 to Ron; 2 to David(CAMPBELL); 3 to Mike(IRWIN), Doug(GOODFELLOW) and Tom; 4 to David(TROTTER), (F-8) and Martin; 5 to Roy, Earl and William.
GeneticDistance (Testee67Markers) At 67 markers the theoretical Genetic Distance (GD) calculations from Joe show: 3 to Mike(IRWIN) and GZY67(Elliot); 4 to David(TROTTER), John(JOHNSTON), (F-8) and David(CAMPBELL); 6 to Martin; 7 to Earl, Roy, Doug(GOODFELLOW), Michael and William; 8 to Doug(BLAKEY); 9 to Tom; These matches, or the ranking of them in order of closeness, being rather a surprise as the closest match was expected to be with Roy (F-3) a descendant of William, brother of the David, ancestor of one of the cousins involved in the three-sided cousinship stories.
NB the GD of 4 to (F-17) includes 2 differences on the one marker, ie CDYb = 37 (Joe), 39 (F-17)
Joe's closest two matches at 67 markers are GD 3 to an IRWIN and an ELLIOT, both of whom are only 1 off the modal for FAIRBAIRN Lineage 1 (Joe is 3 markers off).
Summary (Witness) We now have the preliminary dna results in for William (F-12), a documented descendant of John A Fairbairn Snr of Stillwater, Washington Co, MN, with Bill is indeed showing as an excellent match to Roy (F-3), the descendant of John's uncle William (phew!) The relationship to the other side of the Hoquiam triangle is rather murkier however as the representative of the Sunderland side of the triangle, Joe (F-10), belongs to "clump 2" of lineage 1. Still related, but how?
With the full 67 marker results in, it rather looks like the 3rd side of the triangle represented by Joe (F-10), is showing marginally closer relationships with the lines of Thomas Fairbairn (marr. Elspeth Redpath), John Fairbairn (marr. Helen Campbell) and Trotter (marr. Jane Fairbairn) Fairbairn) lines. The expected relations above come a close second.
The stated Genetic Distances of 5 for the lines of Thomas (REDPATH) and John (CAMPBELL) and 6/7, the John (FLINT) lines, can probably be marked one less because of the faster mutating markers involved.
