Robert Fairbairn **

#1435, b. cir. 1799, d. aft. 1855

Father-PossJohn? Fairbairn (say 1760 - )

Recruit (AnotherWanted) The project would like to recruit another representative of this line.
With Robert being born Eckford in this timeframe, I thought there just had to be a connection with either Archibald and Alison (Crosser), or James and Mary Bell (Thomson) or ??.
My preliminary thought on finding that this Robert existed was that perhaps he should be the Robert I've assigned as son to Archibald and Alison, but on review, I'm still happy that the Robert Fairbairn in Canada married to Kate Scott, with first son James Archibald, and 2nd dtr Alison, is still a more likely candidate.
And preliminary dna results just in (Jan 2010) do show that a descendant belongs to the "clump 2" part of the jigsaw instead.
A confirming signature for the line to help place him would be good.

Intro In 1851 Robert is shown as a 52 yr old civil engineer, born Eckford (at Hamilton, Lanarkshire), from whence the family seem to have moved south, firstly to Manchester, then to Bow/Poplar in London.
One branch was in New York in the 1920s/1930s, with a son dying in Oregon in 1980 (Donald). Another descendant was Assistant Police Commissioner in Shanghai (William Ewart).

Intro (Matches) (F-27) is showing an excellent match to those in a sub grouping of "clump 2", those sharing marker 570 = 18.
At 37 markers it looked like Robert who married Elizabeth YOUNG (and possibly a.n. other earlier), was going to be closest to that for James and Helen (GOODFELLOW) Fairbairn, but with the full 67 markers now available, his marginally closer match is now to the other two in the sub group, descendants of Robert and Margaret (PATERSON), and James and Elspeth (TROTTER).
A review of "known" and "believed" information follows:
Assuming that the James married to Helen GOODFELLOW, is indeed the James, son of George and Janet (MURRAY) born Kelso 1788, he has a brother Robert. However that Robert is fully accounted for in census and death records, so cannot be this Robert.
Some trees believe the George who married Janet MURRAY is the son of the John who married Helen ANDERSON, which would make him brother to the schoolmaster William (married Margaret SCOTT).
I'm jumping to several conclusions here.
William had a second string to his bow, as a surveyor.
This Robert of Eckford appears in records as a surveyor (for the Duke of Hamilton).
William is not known to have had a son Robert however, and to the best of my current knowledge, nor do any of his brothers, but maybe this has just changed?
At least one other tree however has the GOODFELLOW line as descendants of John's brother Robert (b 1716). Jury still out, at least all are in the same small sub set of "clump 2".
Inherited family information for the line of Robert and Margaret (PATERSON) shows Robert as born 1749 to a Robert born 1716 to John 1688, which does look promising.
