| Recruit (Relationship2Prove) | The project would like to recruit a representative of William's line to prove a relationship with John Fairbairn ** William was schoolmaster at Bowden, then Galashiels, and is assumed to be the person referred to in Sir William's biography as the uncle who taught him book-keeping and land-surveying (see below for further info). Not many of this family have been traced to present day as yet, but one grandson lived in Rio de Janeiro and had 8 children (as at 1890 when he died in Edinburgh on a visit home), so there may yet be candidates to definitively represent William's line in the project. Many available pedigrees claim relationships to these lines, however, preliminary results just in (Jan 2010) for a line highly likely to be that of his son John born Bowden 1778, indicate a rethink may be in order. |

| Intro | Hall's History of Galashiels has this to say about Schoolmaster William's son Peter (who officated as interim schoolmaster for a time, presumably when his father died in 1810): "He was cousin to William Fairbairn, the eminent Manchester engineer, who for a term attended the Parish School at Galashiels under his uncle, and was also cousin to Sir Peter Fairbairn of Leeds. Mr Fairbairn died in Edinburgh in 1862, aged seventy years" Peter's 1862 death certificate is rather confusing however in that his son David names his grandparents (who had died some 50 years earlier) as Peter Fairbairn schoolmaster and Margaret maiden surname Anderson. Close! By the 1861 census Peter's age matches his 1792 baptism entry in the Galashiels parish records "William Fairbairn Schoolmaster in Galashiels & Margaret Scott his wife .. had a son named Peter." |
