With the accumulated dna evidence to date it is now looking likely that there were at least two distinct branchings occuring in these (distantly) related FAIRBAIRN families - "clump 1" and "clump 2", with "clump 2" also branching into a subgroup.

In addition it looks like the particular line of Robert and Agnes (LANDRETH) FAIRBAIRN may be typified by CDYa=37 (K).
Interesting to see that the sub-lineage of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT) FAIRBAIRN branches, with one line, that of Martin (F-1), having marker 534 = 10 (q) , and another, Doug (F-14), having markers 576 = 18 (r) and 449 = 29 (C), all of which differences are unique over all of Lineage 1

As the three participants in lineage 1 with cdya = 36 are either descendants of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT) or a presumed descendant of his brother Walter, it is currently assumed that this value defines the descendants of Archibald and Alison (CROSSER), which will be fully confirmed once the remainder of GD (F-29)'s results are in, F-29 being a fully documented descendant, rather than one with a vital bit of the paper trail missing

Michael (F-22)'s results show him as having two unique markers which are assumed to typify his line: 19/394 = 16 (instead of everyone else's 14) and 570 = 20 (a faster mutating marker, but to date only this line as a value of 20).

Unproven paper trail relationship to parent shown
The participants, and therefore patriarchs, initially included in this portion of the "clump 2" lineage were chosen because some genealogies show the George, who married Janet MURRAY, and the Robert, who married Margaret PATERSON, as related, albeit many have patently incorrect dates for George.
Trotter, who married Jean FAIRBAIRN, was included once David (F-7)'s 67 marker results showed him as a GD of 2 from (F-8), one difference of which is a unique value for 447 over all of lineage 1.
(F-17)'s 67 marker results show that the family of John and Jessie (JOHNSTON) FAIRBAIRN should also be included.
Once the known patriarchs' John's, Thomas' , James' and Robert's dna signatures are "corrected" for the markers descendants exhibit as signifying their line alone, outside the modal values, this relationship may well be something like reality.
However, tested against the probabilities given by the Family Tree DNA Time Predictor, it looked optimistic as (F-8) and Doug (F-6) only show a 48% probability that their shared ancestor is within 8 generations.
Subsequent results are starting to show why, and a better way to link the lines, as there is a distinct divide developing between the related Borders FAIRBAIRNs, those with the modal 570=19, and the sub group where 570 = 18.
I'm not sure if it is wise to use a faster mutating marker to group participants or not, but it currently looks logical to me.

Therefore the revamped (Apr 2010) signature chart now shows "clump 2" in these developing groups:
those with 570=19, which looks like a marker from the even earlier common ancestor,
and those with 570=18, who look likely to have split off say 1660s?
Within this latter group there is also a sub group developing, with exact matches between LE(F-31) and Doug(F-6).
This exact match can also loosely include (F-11) given that his GD2 includes two unique marker values over all of Lineage 1.
Although the latest results would indicate that possibly John (marr. Christian WOOD) and George (marr. Janet MURRAY) would be siblings, I have left George with father ?James? and allocated father ?Robert? to John as that is indicated by the naming patterns for their respective children.

I actually suspect I've been super conservative here given, for example, the "Hoquiam triangle", where descendants of what we now know as distinct genetic branches stated that they were cousins in the mid 1900s. Which could be explained by either very long memories for their genealogies, or an extremely loose definition of "cousin" given that even in the 1900s the branches had been separated by at least 4 generations.

As the three participants in lineage 1 with cdya = 36 are either descendants of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT) or a presumed descendant of his brother Walter, it is currently assumed that this value defines the descendants of Archibald and Alison (CROSSER), which will be fully confirmed once the remainder of GD (F-29)'s results are in, F-29 being a fully documented descendant, rather than one with a vital bit of the paper trail missing
