With the accumulated dna evidence to date it is now looking likely that the majority of the Scottish Borders FAIRBAIRNs families are related, with recent results (Feb 2013) showing that the possible earliest line is that known as the Cockburnsparth FAIRBAIRNs
Where relationships are known, the charts are easy to compile, however we are also trying to posit how the obviously related lines do connect up, logically, particularly where there is no paper trail.

They have been joined by two other good matches (Alexander (F-41) from the John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN line, and RJ (F-44) from the line of John & Helen (ATCHESON) FAIRBAIRN.
The member of lineage 1e with this value is assumed to be a coincidence, but it is interesting to note that he is a descendant of another side of the "Hoquiam Triangle", William(F-12).
However he is not their closest match

In addition it looks like the particular line of Robert and Agnes (LANDRETH) FAIRBAIRN may be typified by faster marker CDYa=37 (K).
Interesting to see that the sub-lineage of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT) FAIRBAIRN branches, with one line, that of Martin (F-1), having marker 534 = 10 (q) , and another, Doug (F-14), having markers 576 = 18 (r) and 449 = 29 (C), all of which differences are unique over all of Lineage 1

Only Doug & Michael (F-16), of all of lineage 1, have 576 = 18 (r), and only Doug has 449 = 29 (C) , so the former is assumed to define the line of Archibald and Alison (CROSSER), whose known and believed descendants all share CDYa=36.
The latter, 449=29, is believed to signify the line of their son Archibald who married Janet (SCOTT). Not sure yet how Martin (F-1)'s results should therefore be interpreted in conjunction with this, as although he also has CDYa=36 along with only Doug and Michael over all of Lineage 1, he shares the other two markers with the modal for "clump 1" rather than with his paper trail 3rd cousin once removed, Doug.

Only Martin, of all the lineage 1 Fairbairns, has 641 = 10 (j) (although one of the two FARRIS matches also does so), so this is assumed to define the line of at least John, son of Archibald and Janet (SCOTT), given that a descendant of John's brother Archibald has the modal value of 641=11 (k) (as does Michael (F-16) a descendant of Archibald (married Janet SCOTT)'s assumed brother Walter).
Martin's results, although sharing 391=9 and 520=21, do not share 534 = 18, which is presumably why a clustering program (Neighbor, part of the Phylip package) branches Martin's line prior to where the rest of Lineage 1a meet, rather than matching him more closely to his papertrail relations F-14, F-29, F16

The Genetic Distances provided by Family Tree DNA's Time Predictor have been used to gauge how many generations have been inserted to the theoretical shared ancestors, usually at about 25-30 years per generation, and aiming at the 80% probability mark. 80% was chosen because of results between known relations, and because the bare theory does not really take into account the obvious fact that all of these FAIRBAIRNs are related to a greater or lesser degree (ie the single mutations for specific lines exagerate the distances).
I actually suspect I've been super conservative here given, for example, the "Hoquiam triangle", where descendants of what we now know as distinct genetic branches stated that they were cousins in the mid 1900s. Which could be explained by either very long memories for their genealogies, or an extremely loose definition of "cousin" given that even in the 1900s the branches had been separated by at least 4 generations.
